Del.Monte Held ♠ 10 ♥ 104 ♦ Q109432 ♣ J954 bid two hearts. Thompson in the passout seat protected with double. Soon after Del’Monte was playing in two hearts doubled. Went down five for -1400.
There was no play record at the other table. North-South played in two hearts, made 10 tricks for +170.
Newman won 15 imps and the match.
Newman will meet Klinger (R Klinger, M Mullamphy, A De Livera, I Robinson, B Jacobs, B Thompson) in the final.

Perhaps you play something complicated like 2D over the X says that our diamond fit rates to be better than either of our major suit fits – pass or correct.

Close….I leave it to y’all to work out but obviously advancer (the partner of the overcaller) has three actions — pass, 2D and xx on hands where he doesn’t want to pick a major. He needs to deal with hands where he knows where he wants to play (clubs diamonds) and hands where he wants to suggest a final destination. That’s four sequences and three bids so he cant both insist and suggest clubs. But you can take it from there!

This adventure amid complications which suggests West bidding 2 diamonds, just because he had a 6 card suit, and not obediently following partner’s suggestion resulting in -1400 belongs in the 23rd century and obviously we must await that free from bridge logic time before we may even consider offering such a thing.
